After replacing the hard drive in your MacBook or iMac, you have to install macOS High Sierra. New drivers must be installed before you begin the OS installation to ensure that the device will work correctly.

4 steps to install macOS High Sierra

It's easy to install macOS High Sierra yourself if you follow our instructions. You'll need a MacBook with High Sierra installed and an empty flash drive of 5.4 GB or more.

Which models you can install High Sierra on:

  • MacBook and iMac (since the end of 2009);
  • MacBook Pro and Mac mini (since mid-2010);

1. Preparing the device

The first step to install macOS High Sierra is to power off the device and disconnect all external drives (hard disks and flash drives).

Then follow the instructions:

  • plug in the bootable flash drive;
  • Hold down "Alt" ("Option" or "⌥") key on the keyboard to power on the device
  • release the key when the download window appears on the screen.

2. Boot from the external flash drive

To boot from the external flash drive, follow the below algorithm:

  • Use your mouse or keyboard arrows to select "Install macOS High Sierra" in the download window and press Enter;
  • The process of copying files will start, it can take about half an hour;
  • When the language selection option appears, select your preferred language and press "Enter" again.


3. Hard disk setup

If your device has one hard disk drive and does not need to be configured, you skip to the next step. Otherwise, follow the below procedure to continue to install macOS High Sierra:

  • select "Disk Utility" from the menu, press "Enter" on the keyboard or use the mouse to select "Continue";
  • select the hard drive on the left, if there is more than one, make sure that the right one is selected, because it will be formatted before installation;
  • In the window that opens, click the "Erase" button;
  • select the name for the drive, the standard is to leave GPT (GUID Partition Map);
  • if the drive is an SSD instead of an HDD, select APFS, but if the device does not support the new OS, leave the macOS Extended format preinstalled;
  • click "Erase", then "Done" and exit "Disk Utility".


4. Installing High Sierra

In the final step, select "Reinstall macOS" from the menu, press "Enter" or "Continue", then:

  • read the license agreement;
  • confirm that you accept the terms and conditions of the agreement by clicking "Agree";
  • Wait for the system to install macOS High Sierra and the device to restart automatically.
